Lion, Firebirds win regional tennis titles

? Lawrence High’s Thomas Irick and the Free State doubles team of Nick Pellett and Richard Lu are regional tennis champions.

Irick breezed through four matches Friday to win the singles competition at a Class 6A regional, and Pellett and Lu won four matches in straight sets to win in doubles.

Free State’s Andrew Craig also qualified for state in singles, winning three of four matches to finish fifth. And the LHS doubles team of Matt Grom and Pace Leggins placed sixth and qualifed for state.

Irick won two matches by 6-0, 6-0 scores, another 6-0, 6-1, and defeated Olathe North’s Austin Crist, 6-0, 6-2, for the championship.

The state tournament is Friday and Saturday at Maize

Free State placed third and Lawrence High fourth in the eight-team regional.

“Thomas played very very well,” LHS coach Chris Marshall said. “He lost three games in four matches. That’s pretty efficient playing. I’m very pleased with Grom and Leggins. We’ve been kind of hit and miss. We’ve got some confidence going into state.
