A Lawrence resident who is a Topeka High School senior has been recognized as one of 141 students who are 2012 U.S. Presidential Scholars.

Nicholas Henriquez is one of three Kansas seniors who was named on Wednesday as a Presidential Scholar, an honor given to high school seniors who have demonstrated outstanding academic achievement, artistic excellence, leadership, citizenship, service and contribution to school and community.

The scholars will be honored for their accomplishments in Washington, D.C., in June.

In April, Henriquez was one of 800 black American high school seniors to be recognized as an Achievement Scholar through the National Merit Scholarship Corporation.

Earlier this year, Lawrence High School senior Leah Towle and Free State High School senior Sisira Srisutiva were among the 45 Kansas seniors named as candidates in the U.S. Presidential Scholar Program.

Shawnee Mission West senior Megan Smith, of Lenexa, and Blue Valley North senior Jiemin Wei, of Overland Park, are the other two 2012 U.S. Presidential Scholars from Kansas.
