Cleavinger K’s 13 in LHS baseball victory

? Garrett Cleavinger struck out 13 batters in six innings, and Lawrence High’s baseball team defeated Olathe East, 9-4, on Tuesday.

The Lions overcame a 3-0 deficit with two runs in the fourth and six in the fifth.

CJ Stuever’s squeeze bunt scored Kieran Severa to give LHS a 4-3 lead in the fifth. Stuever was safe when Olathe East threw the ball away, and the Lions went on to score six runs in the inning.

“The floodgates kind of opened up,” LHS coach Brad Stoll said.

Cleavinger walked just one batter in six innings.

“Garrett had great command of his fastball, great command of his slider,” Stoll said. “He just did a great job. He’s had a very good past couple of weeks. He was really dominant today.”

Shane Willoughby went 3-for-4 for the Lions, and Stuever, Matt Sutliffe and CJ Roush drove in two runs apiece.

The Lions (10-7) will play at Shawnee Mission North at 7 tonight.
