Preschool students can enroll Monday

Enrollment for Kennedy School’s pre-kindergarten and peer model programs begins Monday.

To enroll in preschool, children must be 4 years old by Aug. 31 and live within the Lawrence school district.

Families who are eligible for free lunch and have children not already attending another preschool program qualify for the preschool program. Families can also qualify to send their children there if they are eligible for reduced-price lunches and do not have children already attending another preschool program, and meet one of the following criteria: custodial parent is unmarried, family is being referred by SRS, child was born to a teen parent, the parent is lacking a high school diploma or GED, child qualifies for migrant status, or English is the child’s second language.

The preschool runs 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays. On Wednesdays, it goes from 8 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. For families who meet the qualifications, there is no fee.

The peer model program provides positive interaction, demonstrates play skills and models appropriate language and behavior for children with special needs in a typical classroom setting. It is open to children who are 3 years old by Aug. 31. The program costs $150 a month and offers morning and afternoon half-day sessions four days a week.
