‘Phog’ stories

To the editor:

I knew “Phog” Allen for many, many years and he told me three things I’ve never forgotten.

  1. Raise the goal two feet. The ones who recruit the tallest wins! He said that even when Wilt was here.

  2. He’d get the team all warmed up on the floor and then go to the dressing room for their last exciting words of wisdom. Then they’d return and they played the National Anthem and they lost their incentive!

  3. Phog retired when he was 70. He was trained as an osteopath and he went back to work. One time, when he had me on my back, “greased up” and he was vibrating a tool, he told me an osteopath doesn’t have to break your bones any more than a good lawyer has to yell!

You know, that makes sense.
