Perry man gets probation for choking teenager multiple times last year

A Douglas County judge Friday ordered a 19-year-old Perry man to serve two years on probation and comply with recommendations from a mental health evaluation for choking his former girlfriend dozens of times last year.

Trevor J. Benedict had pleaded no contest in February to two counts of misdemeanor child endangerment after prosecutors reduced two original counts of felony aggravated child endangerment.

“I never wanted to harm anyone,” Benedict said in court. “I never intended for harm to come of her.”

The 17-year-old girl testified at a February preliminary hearing she consented to having Benedict choke her during the several months they dated beginning in December 2010 and that she lost consciousness during one of the incidents at her Douglas County residence.

Benedict, who was a Kansas University student at the time of his arrest last August, is prohibited from having any contact with the girl and also must submit to GPS monitoring at least through the summer.

Pokorny said after one year she would review his case to decide if his probation term needs to be extended another 12 months or terminated. He faces two years in jail if he’s found to violate conditions of his probation.
