Lawrence man, 49, sentenced to probation for disturbance last July

A judge Friday morning sentenced a 49-year-old Lawrence man to serve two years on probation for a disturbance last July that prompted officers to subdue him with a Taser.

In February, Martin Dean Wales pleaded no contest to criminal threat and aggravated assault in front of District Judge Sally Pokorny. Cheryl Wright, a spokeswoman for the Douglas County District Attorney’s Office, said Wales would be required to follow recommendations from mental health, drug and alcohol evaluations. He faces a 19-month prison sentence if he’s found to violate terms of his probation.

Wales was arrested July 6, 2011, after sheriff’s officers alleged he refused to comply with demands to leave a building in the 1700 block of East 1350 Road, just east of Michigan Street in Lawrence. Earlier that day Wales was involved in a disturbance with a woman inside. She left the house and was treated for injuries at Lawrence Memorial Hospital.
