Free State baseball falls, 7-2

Free State High’s baseball team couldn’t string together enough hits Wednesday to keep up with visiting St. James Academy in a 7-2 loss.

The Firebirds only produced a pair of base hits — a two-run single from Montana Samuels in the fifth inning and a single from Lee McMahon in the sixth — but coach Mike Hill said the results didn’t represent how aggressive the team’s approach had been at the plate.

“Honestly, I wasn’t displeased at all with the way we swung the bats,” the coach said, adding that the Firebirds (0-4) kept sending the ball at St. James’ fielders when they made sound contact.

What really hurt FSHS in the make-up game, Hill added, were miscues in the top of the second, when the Thunder plated five runs.

Senior Trent Johnson started for Free State and took the loss, his third of the year, with four innings of work. He struck out two and allowed six hits.

At 5:30 tonight, FSHS will host Olathe East.
