40 years ago: Changes coming for county trash disposal

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for March 19, 1972:

  • Plans were in the works for the Trinity United Methodist Church building and grounds, 2141 Maple Lane, to be converted into a day care center and preschool. More details were expected to be released in the coming week.
  • Members of the Douglas County Solid Waste Management Committee were working towards the completion of a plan required by state law. Douglas County was then producing approximately 250 tons of trash every day, and the new plan was designed to outline a system for handling it as well as the financial means to pay for the system. The plan was expected to have the most effect on rural residents who for years had handled their garbage problems in their own way and often on their own property. Changes were expected as the State Board of Health was tightening their regulations on waste disposal.
