From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for March 17, 1987:

• The latest chapter in the Downtown Mall Saga involved parking. The current proposal for a 360,000-square-foot mall in the 600 block of downtown called for most of the parking to be provided for by a six-level structure to be built at Sixth and Kentucky streets, the northwest corner of the mall site. Objections to the proposed structure were coming from the Downtown Lawrence Association, whose members felt it was too far from the rest of the Massachusetts Street stores, and Old West Lawrence residents, who thought it would be too tall and would ruin the atmosphere of Central [now Buford Watson] Park.
• Balding men in Lawrence were having mixed reactions to the announcement of a possible cure for hair loss. An advisory panel for the Food and Drug Administration had this week approved a new drug, to be known as Rogaine (minoxidil). The drug had already been on the market as a treatment for high blood pressure. Local dermatologist Dr. Lee Bittenbender said that he already had about 20 patients using the drug, but he pointed out that it would probably not be a good solution for all bald men. Other men in Lawrence insisted that “bald is beautiful” and that they wouldn’t change their situation even if they could. “I enjoy being bald. The only people I would impress would be people who didn’t know me. The cost of it wouldn’t be worth it,” said Sgt. Ron Dalquest of the Lawrence Police Department.
