• U.S. Rep. Jim Slattery announced today that state legislators might soon have the power to increase the speed limit on rural stretches of interstate highways. “I believe the states will be given the authority to raise the speed limit from 55 mph to 65 mph in rural areas but there will be a tough requirement to enforce the new speed limit,” Slattery said.
• Movies showing in Lawrence this weekend included “Lethal Weapon,” “Hoosiers,” “Angel Heart,” “A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors,” “Some Kind of Wonderful,” “Platoon,” “Mannequin,” and “Tin Men.” Lawrence Community Theater was presenting the play “The Foreigner.” The Billy Spears Band was playing for the St. Patrick’s Dance at the Knights of Columbus Hall, and Cliff Downing with Bad News was playing at Shiloh. The Village Inn was hosting an all-you-can-eat fish fry for $4.99 a person, and at Fantasyland roller rink at 3210 Iowa, two dollars for admission also included skate rental.
