25 years ago: Runaway gas-station customer leads police on chase

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for March 15, 1987:

  • Recent balmy weather had awakened spring fever in many Lawrence residents, especially gardeners. Those with green thumbs were searching through local garden centers for gardening supplies, but employees were trying to caution them that spring had not yet truly arrived and that there was still a chance of a late frost.
  • A Lawrence man who had been arrested on a recent Saturday night had been treated and released from Lawrence Memorial Hospital after his car had struck the rear of a Lawrence Police Department vehicle. The man had left a gas station at 3300 W. Sixth at about 8:25 p.m. without paying the $14 he owed for fuel, but a station employee had reported the incident to police with a description of the vehicle. A chase had ensued which had ended at the corner of North Second and North Third streets. The identity of the man had not yet been determined because he had not had a driver’s license.
