Resolution on Kansan-Turkish Network sent back to committee

? A resolution creating the Kansan-Turkish Friendship Network was sent back to committee after some legislators said they had problems with the measure. The dispute came to light while a contingent of officials from Turkey were visiting the Kansas House on Wednesday.

Several legislators approached by the Lawrence Journal-World said they had a problem with the House Resolution 6013 but declined to elaborate.

State Rep. TerriLois Gregory, R-Baldwin City, said in an email “There was confusion about the Kansas-Turkish resolution that the House was to vote on this morning. Last week members brought concerns with 6013 to the attention of Leadership. Working with the sponsors of the resolution to strike the troubling lines, a new resolution (6016) will be offered later to the House.”

In HR 6013, which was sent back to committee, Turkey is praised as “clearly cherishing the universal values of freedom, democracy and human rights.” It also praises Turkey for its commitment “to world peace and liberty, as well as its tolerance of others in the secular and religious venues.”

Those phrases are not in the new resolution, HR 6016.
