Overland Park ? The last of three northeastern Kansas facilities that make up the so-called Education and Research Triangle opened its doors Friday.

Gov. Sam Brownback was among the speakers during the ribbon-cutting ceremony for the $23 million building that expands the Kansas University’s Edwards Campus in Overland Park by more than half.

Called the Business, Engineering, Science and Technology Building, the 75,000-square-foot facility was financed through an eighth-cent sales tax increase approved by Johnson County voters in 2008.

Among the estimated $15 million the sales tax raises each year, about $50,000 will go to pay for scholarships for Johnson County residents to enroll in business, engineering, science and technology programs at the Edwards Campus. With the new building, the campus will be able to serve 1,000 additional students and offer 10 new degree programs.
