40 years ago: Planners begin preliminary work on Mass Street redesign

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for March 2, 1972:

  • Thin blue chalk-lines appearing on downtown sidewalks were raising questions from curious pedestrians. The lines were a measuring guide for engineers planning the reconstruction of Massachusetts Street from Seventh to 11th. Plans had been approved in January for a new look for the four-block area, including sawtooth curb-cuts, new crosswalks, and improved landscaping.
  • Owners of the former Hillview Golf Course, south of town and east of U.S. Highway 59, said that they had no immediate plans for the area. The 320-acre course had closed, apparently due to lack of customers.
