From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for March 1, 1912:

• “February was just an ordinary winter month. The regular monthly report [was] made today by F. W. Bruckmiller of the ‘weather department’ of the University. The only record that February broke, if it may be called a record, is that there were no earthquakes recorded during the past twenty-nine days. Since the seismograph has been installed on Oread it has been ‘quite the thing’ for every month to have its earthquake.”
• “J. E. Nichols of Vinland was 80 years old yesterday but he has just had 20 birthdays, as he was born in February 29. About 200 of his relatives and friend living in twelve states sent him post cards. Mr. Nichols has lived on the same farm for 35 years. He is an advocate of the Roosevelt policy. He has eight children, forty-two grandchildren, twenty of whom have had more birthdays than he, and fifteen great-grandchildren.”
• “H. B. Bullene has returned from his extended stay in New York where he has been making purchases for the big store here. Mr. Bullene spent quite a while at market and has bought many beautiful things for the store here. Some of the advance spring styles have arrived and they are surely noteworthy for style and beauty.”
