Southwestern College in Winfield has announced its Dean’s Honor Roll for the spring 2012 semester. Students who earned a GPA of at least 3.70 were eligible. Area students on the list include Dylan Moore, of Ottawa; Stephanie Wilson, of Meriden; and Allyssa Zentner, of Grantville.

Kate Falkenstien, of Lawrence, recently graduated from Yale University with a Bachelor of Science degree in psychology. She will attend Stanford Law School in the fall.

Ashli and Justin Smith, of McPherson, announce the birth of their daughter, Raegan Kaylynn Smith, on May 25 in Newton. Maternal grandparents are Debbie Hart, of Lawrence; and Danny and Tani Ruff, of Ozawkie. Paternal grandparents are Rhonda and Derek Chappell, of Ottawa; and David Smith, of Perry. Brooke Latta Sutherland, of Lawrence, received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Washington and Lee University on May 24 in Lexington, Va. Sutherland majored in journalism and mass communications and French. She graduated summa cum laude, was a member of Phi Beta Kappa and was the valedictorian of the Class of 2012.

Austin R. Baragary has received a Journey Grant from William Jewell College in Liberty, Mo. He will travel to Ireland in the fall and enroll in the Peace and Conflict Studies Concentration. Baragary was a sophomore majoring in rhetoric and political communication during the spring semester.

Mark T. Jongman-Sereno, of Lawrence, who received an Architecture-Professional Degree from Iowa State University in Ames, Iowa, was named to the spring 2012 Dean’s List. To qualify, students must earn a GPA of at least 3.50.

Rockhurst University in Kansas City, Mo., has announced the Dean’s List for the spring 2012 semester. This recognizes students who have achieved a GPA of 3.5 or above. Area students on the list include Josh Linton, of Basehor; Brian Talbert, of Eudora; and Amy Meyers and Kaela Severa, both of Lawrence.

Daniel O’Connell, of Lawrence, has received two awards from Emporia State University: the Health, Physical Education and Recreation department’s Graduate Student Major of the Year Award and the Outstanding Graduate Student Award. O’Connell graduated on May 12 with his master’s in Health, Physical Education and Recreation, emphasis on health. On Aug. 1, he will start employment at Baker University as a certified athletic trainer.

Five Kansas University students received outstanding achievement awards from the Kansas Geological Survey, based on KU’s West Campus, including Peter Monshizadeh, of Lawrence. Monshizadeh, a May graduate with a bachelor’s degree in geography, received the Jack Dangermond/Esri Geospatial Technologies Student Award.

Sarah K. Craft, of Lawrence, graduated May 19 from Saint Anselm College in Manchester, N.H., with a degree in history.

Will Nagengast, of Lawrence, was one of 100 members of Bethel College’s Class of 2012 who graduated May 20 in North Newton. Nagengast graduated cum laude with a Bachelor of Arts in history.

Bethel College also has announced area students on its spring 2012 Dean’s List and Honor Roll.

Students named to the Dean’s List (3.7 to 4.0 semester GPA): Adam Ewy, of Lawrence.

Students named to the Honor Roll (3.5 to 3.69 GPA): Laurel Nagengast, of Lawrence; Kaitlin Heller, of Lawrence; and Genevieve Rucker, of Lawrence.

Andrea Fouts, of Ottawa, is one of 30 Kansas State University students selected for Mortar Board, a national college senior honor society.

Several Kansas University music students were scheduled to return to Lawrence’s sister city, Eutin, Germany, to continue the music exchange between the two cities. Thirty-three students were to take part in the festival June 15-Aug. 20, performing three operas: “Nabucco,” “L’Elisir d’Amore” and “Die Blume von Hawaii,” as well as two orchestral concerts and two chamber concerts. Hugo Vera, KU graduate and operatic tenor with the Metropolitan Opera in New York City, was to perform in “Nabucco.”

Traveling with the students was Dean Robert Walzel, who was to participate in a chamber music concert, and David Neely, director of orchestral activities, who was to conduct the final concert of the trip.

Kaylee Wiggins, of Lawrence, has been awarded a Judge Norman D. Thompson Scholarship to attend Pittsburg State University.

Sandra Haag, a student at Eudora High School, has been recognized by the United States Achievement Academy as a student of excellence in business education. She will appear in the academy’s official national yearbook.

Jessyka Coulter, of Tonganoxie, was named a Roadman Scholar at Morningside College in Sioux City, Iowa, in recognition of high academic distinction for the 2011-12 academic year. Roadman Scholars must have a cumulative GPA of 3.76 or above. Coulter was also named to the Dean’s Honor List at Morningside for the 2012 spring semester. The Dean’s Honor list recognizes students who achieve a 3.67 GPA or better.

Julie Dianne Daniels, of Lawrence, recently graduated from Valdosta State University in Georgia with an Associate of Arts degree.

Trinity Standridge, of Bonner Springs,was selected as the costume design assistant and house manager for Emporia State University’s Summer Theatre production of “The Fox on the Fairway” June 27-30.

William Mockry, a Free State High School graduate, graduated in May with his Master of Teaching Arts degree from Brown University in Providence, R.I.

Alexandra Brooke Baslee, of Eudora, graduated from Northwest Missouri State University in Maryville with a Bachelor of Science degree in agricultural business.

Jeanmarie Montney Omland and Kris Omland announce the birth of their son, Cason Jeffrey Omland, on May 29, 2012, in Toronto.
