From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for June 29, 1972:

Another big drug raid headed by State Atty. Gen. Vern Miller took place this morning at seven Lawrence locations. The raids, 10 months in the planning, resulted in the arrests of 27 persons, including five charged with the sale of heroin. About 70 officers participated in the raid, including nearly all members of the Lawrence Police Department, all employees of the Douglas County Sheriff’s Department, and some Kansas University officers. Although the operation had been conducted with the cooperation the state attorney general’s office as well as the Kansas Bureau of Investigation, there were complaints from county attorney Mike Elwell regarding Miller’s involvement in the raid. “There was really no need for him to be here. I don’t take credit for other people’s work, I really don’t. I’m not jealous, but I don’t know why he needed to be here,” Elwell said. County Commission Chairman Arthur Heck was reportedly displeased for the same reason. Elwell said that he was also perturbed that, although local law enforcement had not notified the media of the impending raid, Miller had called a press conference alerting reporters about it the day before.
