40 years ago: Local horse show has record number of entries

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for June 22, 1972:

  • At a recent special meeting, stockholders of the Lawrence Country Club unanimously had approved a $400,000 building project for a new clubhouse, an enlarged swimming facility and four tennis courts. Plans were to be put out for bids in September; construction was scheduled to begin in October with completion estimated for May or June, 1973.
  • Entries for the annual Lawrence Charity Horse Show had reached a record 375, according to Mrs. Corbin Robison, secretary-treasurer of the show. The four-day event, a benefit for the Fraternal Order of Police, was to take place this week at the Douglas County Fairgrounds. The first night’s schedule included all western style horsemanship, with English, equitation, five-gaited, three-gaited and pony classes on the following three days.
