Michael A. Penny, of Lawrence, has graduated summa cum laude from Texas A&M University in College Station, Texas, with a Bachelor of Science degree in mechanical engineering.

Michael Ornburn, of Lawrence, received his doctor of osteopathic medicine degree from Lincoln Memorial University-DeBusk College of Osteopathic Medicine in Harrogate, Tenn., on May 12.

Jessyka Coulter, of Tonganoxie, graduated magna cum laude from Morningside College in Sioux City, Iowa, on May 12, 2012. Coulter received a Bachelor of Arts degree with majors in biology and business administration.

Two area students graduated May 12 from Benedictine College in Atchison. Andrew Heck, of Lawrence, received a Bachelor of Arts degree in international business. Ann Heschmeyer, of Eudora, received a Bachelor of Arts degree in mass communications.

Twenty Kansas University sophomores have been selected as University Scholars. Each student receives a $250 scholarship per semester for five semesters and a faculty mentor, and enrolls in an interdisciplinary seminar taught by a faculty member noted for a distinguished teaching record.

Area students include Cole Bittel, of Bonner Springs, studying mechanical engineering, to be mentored by Lorin Maletsky from mechanical engineering; Joyce Bohling, of Lawrence, studying English, to be mentored by Carol Holstead from journalism; Gregory Burg, of Lawrence, studying engineering physics, to be mentored by Scott Jenkins from philosophy.

The following area students were named to the spring Dean’s List at Creighton University in Omaha, Neb., for the spring semester. Andrew Jones, of Lawrence, a May 2012 doctoral graduate in optical physics at Kansas State University, won the Graduate Student Award for Academics.

Jacob D. Kirkpatrick, of Basehor, was named to the Columbia College Dean’s List in Columbia, Mo., for the 2012 spring semester. To qualify, a student must have a minimum GPA of 3.5.

Weston Wiebe, of Lawrence, graduated from College of the Ozarks in Point Lookout, Mo., on May 13. Wiebe received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Communication Arts: Public Relations.

Tonganoxie resident Rachel Collinge was named to the Dean’s List at Harding University in Searcy, Ark., for the spring semester. To be eligible, a student must earn a 3.65 or higher GPA.

Trinity Standridge, of Bonner Springs, has been chosen to play Patsy Price in Emporia State University’s Summer Theatre production of “Dearly Beloved.” The show runs June 13-16.

Zoe Timmerman, of Lawrence, has been named to the Dean’s List at Coe College in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Students who rank in the top 10 percent of the student body are named to the Dean’s List. For the 2012 spring term, students achieving a GPA of 3.92 or higher qualified.

Katherine Steir, of Lawrence, has been named to the Dean’s List of Macalester College in St. Paul, Minn., for the spring semester. To be eligible, a student must have achieved a semester GPA of at least 3.75.

Forty-nine Kansas University students recently received more than 75 awards and scholarships totaling more than $119,000 given by the department of theater during the annual Stage Supper. Area students are listed below.
