25 years ago: Local group taking inventory of Oread houses

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for June 13, 1987:

The Lawrence Preservation Alliance was seeking volunteers to help complete the Heart of Oread survey. The group was taking an inventory of about 200 houses in the Oread area, bounded by 11th, 14th, Louisiana, and Massachusetts streets, classifying the houses according to architectural style, and researching the history of the original owners. One goal was to prepare nominations for houses to be included in the National Register of Historic Places. Another objective was to help identify which houses were able to be restored and which were beyond repair. A $5,000 grant from the National Park Service through the Kansas State Historical Society was helping fund the project.
