25 years ago: Linwood High School to close over parent protests

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for June 9, 1987:

Basehor-Linwood school board members voted this week to close the Linwood High School after next year. “The motion was to consolidate our secondary education program in the district,” said Supt. Charles Edmonds. “It will now be our responsibility to examine the options to consolidate grades 7-12. They [the board] don’t plan to operate a dual secondary program.” About 150 residents had attended the board meeting, where the issue of closing Linwood High proved to be a very emotional one. The decision to close passed on a 5-2 vote after opponents had attempted to point out the additional costs of closing, such as razing the old building, busing students to Basehor, and expanding Basehor schools.
