From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for June 5, 1987:

• An existing reciprocal agreement for Missouri and Kansas students was apparently coming to an end. The agreement had allowed students from one state to attend certain programs at universities in the other without paying out-of-state tuition. The arrangement had involved mainly architecture students from Missouri and dental students from Kansas. Stanley Koplik, executive director for the Kansas Board of Regents, said this week that he had been given unofficial word that the Missouri Board of Regents was bowing out of the arrangement.
• The Lawrence area had taken a beating from sudden thunderstorms the previous afternoon. Strong winds, heavy rain, and lightning had caused about 20 separate power outages around town. The heavy rainfall had also caused considerable damage to the business office and composing room areas of the Journal-World building. Two sections of the roof had been removed temporarily for needed repairs when the sudden storm developed, causing severe leakage into the rooms below. Roofers had placed a temporary cover over the open roof area while the entire staff pitched in to move or cover furniture, equipment, and records to dry portions of the building. The afternoon press run had been completed on schedule and the staff continued its cleaning and repair duties today.
