From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for June 1, 1912:

• “Some wells in Lawrence have been condemned by the state chemist as furnishing water that is unfit for use. The department of water analysis of the University has just completed an investigation of all wells in the east part of town and of those, ten have been absolutely condemned and the eleventh is being held under strong suspicion…. The report states that in all of these wells there has been found a sufficient amount of bacillus coli to render the use of the water very dangerous and the condemnation of the wells is recommended. The samples were taken from wells, cisterns and drilled wells located on New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Delaware and Rhode Island streets.”
• “Jerome G. Beatty is in town. About the newspaper offices of Lawrence this had a very significant meaning for it was in a Lawrence newspaper office that Jerome began his career as a newspaper man. Several years ago Jerome Beatty was on the staff of the Lawrence Daily Journal and it was on that paper that he did his first work. From Lawrence he went to Kansas City and from there to New York. Now he is with the New York Globe…. Jerome has made good in the eastern newspaper field and is regarded as one of the best men in New York. He has just covered an extraordinary assignment having accompanied Mrs. David Beach on her 1,071 mile walk from New York to Chicago. Mrs. Beach made the trip to demonstrate the value of a raw vegetable diet eating nothing on the trip except prunes, raisins, figs and similar fruits.”
• “Ever since the Sophomores painted the big yellow ’14 on the roof of the high school building the seniors have been plotting and laying plans for further adorning the roof but it was not until after the close of school that any of them were carried out. But yesterday morning persons who passed the high school building noticed two large ’12s painted in white, one on the roof and the other on the north wall of the building. The seniors have accomplished their purpose but no one knows who did it.”
• “Mrs. Vina Weyermuller spent Memorial Day at Fort Dodge, Kansas. She was greatly impressed with conditions in Western Kansas.”
