Man convicted in drug case to serve nearly 7 years

Douglas County District Judge Sally Pokorny sentenced a 21-year-old Lawrence man to up to nearly seven years in prison on a variety of drug charges, including possession of marijuana with intent to distribute near school property.

Buonsuay Khanya had pleaded guilty to 11 charges, most of them drug-related, for crimes on multiple dates in 2011 and 2012. As part of a plea agreement, the charges were consolidated into one case.

Pokorny sentenced Khanya to the maximum 68 months on the marijuana charge, as well as 15 months on a possession of cocaine with intent to distribute charge. Those sentences were imposed consecutively, adding up to a total of 83 months in prison. Several other sentences were handed down, but all run concurrent with the more serious charges.

Khanya also will face three years supervised probation and will be required to register as a drug offender for 15 years following his release.
