Lawrence Community Nursery School is about to embark on a project in which volunteer support will be needed to help repair its retaining wall and put in a sidewalk. The retaining wall exists to keep the playground safe, and school officials are looking forward to adding a sidewalk for not only their school community to use, but the neighborhood as well. The school is located at the corner of Seventh and Alabama streets. This project is scheduled from Aug. 3 to Aug. 5, and about five volunteers will be needed each day. Parents who work in the construction business will be overseeing the project, guiding volunteers and providing skills training, so no specialized skills are needed, just a willingness to be outside and do manual labor. Tasks include shoveling, carrying bricks, smoothing surfaces, removing rocks, etc. Volunteers will be needed for several hours each day, but there is no requirement to commit to more than a day of helping out. Immediate needs

• CLO’s Midnight Farm will be hosting an after-school program for kids with special needs starting this fall and is in need of lots of volunteer support. There will be different themes for each day, including music, art, sports and entertainment. CLO is looking for regular volunteers to come and help in the planning and execution of these activities. Training will be provided for working with individuals with disabilities; no experience is required, but volunteers who have ideas about and knowledge of the different themes would be appreciated. • The Lied Center of Kansas is looking for volunteer ushers for its upcoming season. Volunteer ushers are responsible for greeting patrons, handing out programs, tearing tickets and assisting patrons with seating and other needs. Ushers will help with Lied Center performing arts events, Kansas University School of Music performances, as well as campus and community rental events. Volunteers are asked to make a commitment for at least six months, and can sign up for the events they plan to work at the beginning of each semester. If you’re friendly, helpful, cheerful, courteous, assertive and love performing arts, this is a great volunteer gig. All new ushers will attend one evening of training and event sign-up. • Headquarters Counseling Center is seeking caring people interested in training as a volunteer counselor. Learn more at one of the upcoming information meetings, which will be from 6 p.m. to 7:15 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 21 at First United Methodist Church, 946 Vt., or 6 p.m. to 7:15 p.m. Monday, Aug 27 at the Lawrence Public Library, 707 Vt.
