From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for July 29, 1972:

The Lawrence area was expected to close out July with an above-normal rainfall total for the month. Rain overnight had been measured at nearly an inch at the KU weather station, making the month’s total 4.14 inches, compared to a normal July total of 3.74. The official rain total for the year was 16.93 inches, which was 2.35 inches shy of normal but a big improvement from a week earlier, when the area was still six inches behind. No severe weather had come through the Lawrence area lately, but a line of storms had moved across southwest Kansas overnight, causing extensive damage and injuring at least seven people.in the town of Sublette. Ten mobile homes had been destroyed there, with store fronts blown out, a railroad car blown over, and a hole punched in a grain elevator. Reports from the town of Minneola said that not one tree there had been left undamaged. Even heavier damage was reported from near Plains, where the storm had brought down an AT&T relay tower which was on the main cross-country network from New York to Oakland, California. Circuits had been re-routed and long-distance telephone service restored about three hours later.
