Raiders begin postseason play

The Lawrence Raiders will begin postseason play today at the Class AAA zone tournament in Pittsburg.

Lawrence will play its first game of the three-team tourney at 4 p.m. against Tonganoxie, and if the Raiders win, they will take on Pittsburg at 6 p.m.

Raiders coach Brad Romme indicated either Trent Johnson or Cam Solko would be the starting pitcher for Game 1 and said he would leave it up to them to make the final decision.

If the Raiders lose to Tonganoxie, they will play the loser of Pittsburg and Tonganoxie at 4 p.m. Friday in a double-elimination match-up. Should Lawrence win two games today or win one game today and the double-elimination game, the Raiders will then play in the championship game at 6 p.m. Friday.

The Raiders enter the zone tournament with a record of 23-12, and Romme believes there are two keys for the team in order to advance to the American Legion State Tournament, Aug. 1-5 in Manhattan.

“Always, always, always pitching and defense,” Romme said. “We’ve swung (the bats) pretty well all year long.”
