25 years ago: Cottonwood, Inc., teams up with Kansas Open

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for July 19, 1987:

It was announced today that local agency Cottonwood, Inc., was venturing into the world of golf for its fund-raising efforts. The 12-year-old Kansas Open Golf Tournament, with $36,000 in prize money, was scheduled to take place July 30 through Aug. 1 at Alvamar Public Golf Course. Cottonwood’s executive director Howard Hasler explained that the organization, along with a few others, had responded to a January advertisement saying that Alvamar was looking for a Lawrence group to help operate the tournament. “From the outset, Cottonwood got my attention with their enthusiasm and the involvement of the people there,” said Jerry Waugh, senior vice president of Alvamar Inc. and tournament director. Cottonwood could expect to net $30,000 from this year’s Kansas Open, according to Judy Morris, the agency’s director of development. Hasler was enthusiastic about the fund-raising possibilities of the tournament, saying that existing Cottonwood funds “were going to leave us real short of meeting the needs of the Douglas and Jefferson County residents.”
