40 years ago: Public warned about rabid animals in the wild

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for July 17, 1972:

An estimated 400 Kansans were to be required to undergo the painful series of 14 to 20 anti-rabies injections this year, according to Dr. Donald E. Wilcox, director of disease control for the Kansas Health Department. Wilcox reported this week that 112 cases of rabies in animals had been confirmed last year, the highest total since 148 cases had been confirmed in 1965. Of last year’s cases, 101 had been in skunks. Officials with the Kansas Forestry, Fish and Game commission were warning “outdoorsmen” to be alert to all possible cases of rabies and never to pick up wild animals, even baby ones.
