From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for July 16, 1972:

Train rides were about to get a lot more dry, at least when the rails led through Kansas, if Atty. Gen. Vern Miller got his way. Miller ordered today that Amtrak trains immediately cease the sale of alcoholic beverages during their travel through the state of Kansas. Failures to comply with the “cease and desist” notice were to result in arrests and prosecution. It was still illegal in Kansas to sell alcoholic beverages by the drink, and consumption was forbidden in public places except for those bearing the “private club” license. Miller had sent the notice to an Amtrak official after his office had received information that alcoholic beverages were being sold, dispenses and consumed on passenger trains operated by the National Rail Passenger Corporation within the state of Kansas.
