From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for July 11, 1972:

• At a news conference today called by the Lawrence Chamber of Commerce, it was announced that the Gustin-Bacon Group of Certain-teed Products Corp. would be moving its headquarters and manufacturing facilities from Kansas City to Lawrence in early 1973. The $13 million a year employer of over 100 workers was a major supplier of emergency and parking brakes for heavy-duty trucks and trailers, railroad air brake parts, and mechanical pipe couplings and fittings. Company representatives were to appear before the City Commission this afternoon to request at least $1.8 million in industrial revenue bonds to finance the construction of the new plant.
• About 150 people had visited the Kansas University observatory on the previous day to view the partial solar eclipse visible from Lawrence. Gary Westergren, a Tonganoxie junior majoring in astronomy, had projected an image of the eclipse onto a screen through a telescope and had then explained the occurrence to the audience.
