From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for July 8, 1912:

• “The K. U. Seismograph recorded yesterday morning’s earthquake in Alaska as the most severe since the installation of the instrument at the University. The shocks lasted for 70 minutes according to the instrument beginning at 1:15 in the morning. The main waves lasted for fifteen minutes and the waves measured 3 3/4 inches across which is by far the largest ever recorded by the seismograph. Ordinarily the waves are very small.”
• “The annual picnic of the street car company will be held Thursday afternoon and evening at Woodland Park. This is to be the date when the street car man can enjoy himself. Other picnics have little attraction to the street car employee, as it means big crowds, long hours, and plenty of work for him to handle the passengers who depend upon him to take them back and forth from the park. The street car company established the custom last summer of giving its men an outing in the park and this year the date has been set for Thursday, July 11. All of the regular men will be given the afternoon and evening off and will spend the day out at the park, while the substitutes will take care of the street car service. All of the attractions will be open to the men and their families…. The big event of these picnics is always the baseball game between the morning and afternoon car men…. The program will be much the same as last year with a big picnic supper in the park. The roller coaster will be in operation and rides will be free for the picnickers. There will be dancing and all the other attractions of the park.”
• “The Chautauqua people are releasing a balloon every evening now and in these are a number of circulars. The red one is worth two dollars to the finder as there will be a ticket, good for all the numbers on the program, given to each person turning in the same…. This is going to be a fine Chautauqua and the people of Douglas county will never have a better chance to go for nothing than by picking up one of these circulars from the balloons that are released each evening. Watch for the balloons.”
• “The Denver Auto Party is to be in Lawrence next Thursday morning according to the present schedule of the trip. They have been delayed one day and will not be in Lawrence at the time they were expected. There will be about a dozen cars in this party.”
