From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for July 2, 1972:

• The Lawrence Jaycees announced that they were ready for their annual fireworks show in Memorial Stadium. Gates were to open at 7 p.m. on the Fourth of July, and two bands, the Paul Gray Dixieland Band and the Musicians Union Band, were to begin playing at 8 p.m. Two members of the Toastmasters Club were scheduled to give patriotic speeches before the fireworks began at dusk. More than $600 worth of pyrotechnics were lined up for the display.
• Records in the Douglas County Clerk’s office showed that during the month of June, 338 speeding convictions had been entered in the Lawrence Municipal Court, with fines totaling $5,731. Both the greatest number of convictions (128) and the greatest fine amount ($1,689) had been recorded during the week of June 19-23. A peek at last week’s municipal court docket showed that 156 people had either appeared in court and were convicted or forfeited bonds in both traffic and non-traffic offenses. Of the eight non-traffic convictions, four were for drunkenness, one for an after-hours cereal malt beverage violation, one for a fireworks violation, and two for allowing their dogs to run loose.
