Jessyka Coulter was named to the Dean’s Honor List at Morningside College in Sioux City, Iowa, for the 2011 fall semester. The Dean’s Honor list recognizes students who achieve a 3.67 grade point average or better.

The Ottawa University Braves football team won the 2011 Buffalo Funds Five Star Champions of Character Award, which recognizes one college team in every sport for “exemplary character and sportsmanship displayed during practice, competition, on campus, and in the community.” Football players participate in a variety of volunteer activities and service programs.

Shane Gimzo, of Perry, is a wide receiver on the team.

Weston Wiebe, of Lawrence, has recently been selected by Who’s Who to appear in the 2011 edition of “Who’s Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges.” Students are chosen based on their academic achievement, service to the community, leadership in extracurricular activities and potential for continued success. Wiebe is a 2008 Lawrence Free State High School graduate.

Jeremy Dowden, a doctoral student studying trombone performance with professor Michael Davidson, was chosen by audition to join the Shenzhen Symphony Orchestra in Shenzhen, China, as principal trombone.

Henry Reiske graduated from Prescott College in Prescott, Ariz., on Dec. 18 with Bachelor of Arts degrees in adventure education and environmental studies. He is a 2007 graduate of Lawrence High School.

The Lawrence Accredited Music Teachers Association presented a student recital at the First Baptist Church on Tuesday, Jan. 17. Students who performed were Maggie Carttar, Sophia LaPoint, Karen McCain, Faelen Jacobson, Morgan Miller, Sisi Srisutiva and Jessica Willis. These students represent the piano studios of Elaine de San Miguel, Evelyn Falen, Sarah Higgins, Janet Johnson and Eric Sakamura.

Justin Trout, of Lawrence, is among the students who qualified for Chadron State College’s academic honors lists for the fall 2011 semester. The school is in Chadron, Neb. Trout was named to the President’s List. The list requires all A’s.

Taylor Gentry, of Lawrence, has been named to Pratt Community College’s fall 2011 President’s Honor Roll. Students on the list must have a 4.0 grade point average.

Chase Muder, a graduate of Lawrence High School, has been named to the Dean’s List at Austin College in Austin, Texas, for the fall 2011 semester.

Stephanie Wilson, of Meriden, was one of several Southwestern College students attending the Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival 44 in Ames, Iowa, from Jan. 15 to Jan. 21. Many of the students competed in acting, design or management-related events.Southwestern College is in Winfield.

Axel R. Fust, Lawrence, was named to the Dean’s List at Missouri Southern State University in Joplin for the fall 2011 semester. Students must have a grade point average of 3.75 or above.

Fall 2011 Honor Scholars for Fort Hays State University’s College of Business and Leadership have been announced. Full-time undergraduate business majors who earned a 4.0 grade-point average for the semester are on the list.

Air Force Airman Mark W. Brune graduated from basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio. Brune completed an intensive, eight-week program that included training in military discipline and studies, Air Force core values, physical fitness, and basic warfare principles and skills. He is a 2011 graduate of Eudora High School.

Brooke L. Sutherland, of Lawrence, a senior at Washington and Lee University, was elected Jan. 19 to Omicron Delta Kappa national leadership fraternity for men and women.

Lawrence High School earned the second-place trophy in K-12 and Southwest Middle School the third-place trophy in K-8 Jan. 21 at the Rockhurst High School Chess Tournament in Kansas City, Mo.

Air Force Airman Andrew R. Rettig graduated from basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio. Rettig earned distinction as an honor graduate. He is a 2005 graduate of Manhattan High School and earned a bachelor’s degree in 2010 from Kansas University.

Kathryn Lunte, of Lawrence, has been named to the Dean’s List at Wheaton College in Norton, Mass., for the fall 2011 semester. To earn Dean’s List honors, a student must complete at least three graded courses and earn a grade point average of 3.5 or above.
