Overland Park man, 38, sentenced to 18 months in prison for battery

A Douglas County judge Friday ordered a 38-year-old Overland Park man to serve an 18-month prison sentence for threatening a woman with a handgun during a domestic incident last July in the 700 block of Connecticut Street.

Justin M. Largent, who had pleaded guilty in December to one count of aggravated battery, committed the crime while on probation for a Butler County case.

“Mr. Largent treated the victim like less than a human,” said prosecutor Mark Simpson, an assistant Douglas County district attorney.

The woman told District Judge Peggy Kittel she believed any time Largent spent in prison would keep him from harming anyone else.

“I’ve been deeply, deeply hurt by the events that happened in July,” she said.

Largent declined to speak during the hearing. His prison sentence was part of a plea agreement in which he waived his right to appeal the sentence, and state prosecutors agreed not to forward the case to federal prosecutors.

Kittel also ordered Largent to pay $962 restitution to the Douglas County Sheriff’s office, the cost of transporting him here from Alabama after his warrant arrest. He also likely will serve an additional eight-month sentence for the Butler County case.
