From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Jan. 23, 1972:

• Lawrence Memorial Hospital had ended 1971 “in the black” regarding their net operating income, which was $2,861,599. By comparison, the net income for 1970 had sunk to $2,460,723, which was $112,060 in the red. LMH board officials credited the improvement to increased patient volume and a concerted effort to hold down expenses.
• A 15-member committee had recently been formed to study and make recommendations about substance abuse in Lawrence. The committee’s function was to “make a statement about the scope of the drug abuse problem within our community,” according to an invitation letter sent by Lawrence Mayor Bob Pulliam to members of area medical agencies, schools, and law enforcement. The committee was also planning to inventory the resources available in Lawrence for drug use control and education.
