From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Jan. 23, 1987:

• Steadily-increasing enrollment at Lawrence High School was expected to worsen an already-overcrowded situation, according to LHS assistant principal Max Rife. The school had 1,818 students enrolled in 1987, which was less than the 2,000 students in 1972, but new state laws and board policies required smaller classes for some subjects, and consequently more classrooms. Rife said that 66 teachers at the high school either shared a room with other teachers or traveled from room to room, taking their teaching supplies with them.
• This was the year that First Lady Nancy Reagan’s “Just Say No” campaign was filtering down to local schools. June Smith’s 27 sixth-graders at Sunset Hill School might have been the first group of Lawrence schoolchildren to form a “Just Say No” club. According to Mrs. Smith, the clubs were intended to teach children self-esteem and coping skills to use in fighting the lure of substance abuse. The club’s first meeting, to be held tonight, was to feature Kansas University basketball players talking to the students on the importance of saying no.
