From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Jan. 19, 1987:

• Nearly a foot of snow had fallen in Lawrence on the recent weekend, and the white stuff wasn’t going anywhere soon. Daytime temperatures were not expected to reach past the upper 20s or low 30s, with overnight lows in the single digits. Working in shifts around the clock since the snow had started falling three days earlier, city crews had now finished about two-thirds of their snow-removal job.
• For people who felt more artistic than frustrated by the recent heavy snowfall, the Lawrence Parks and Recreation Department was holding a snow sculpture contest in South Park this week. The event was open to all ages, with opportunities for pairs or small groups to work together. All participating children were later given passes to Fantasyland roller skating rink for their efforts.
• The Kansas University Union had been temporarily evacuated on a recent Friday night when smoke machines at the Rainmakers’ concert had set off alarms in the building. The evacuation of the more than 900 people in attendance had caused a break of about 15 minutes in the concert.
