40 years ago: LHS captures debate trophy

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Jan. 16, 1972:

  • After nearly a month of vacation, Kansas University students were beginning to trickle back into town. “OH THANK HEAVEN FOR KU STUDENTS — WELCOME HOME,” read a large sign on the front of an unnamed mini-market specializing in “long hours, quick service and convenient location near large apartment areas.” Enrollment for the spring semester was to begin the following day.
  • Lawrence High School had captured the State debate championship for the second straight year. The four LHS debaters had defeated five other 5-A schools at the competition at Emporia State Teachers College. Senior Rick Hird and junior Frank Cross were to compete in the National Forensic League national competition in June.
