40 years ago: County asks feds for help with Clinton Parkway funding

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Jan. 14, 1972:

  • In a meeting with the Douglas County Commission, representatives from the Army Corps of Engineers said that they would not be able to participate in the funding of the Clinton Parkway project. The joint city-county project was to cover four miles of four-laned paved and guttered highway from 23rd and Iowa westward to the northeast corner of the Clinton Dam. Commission chairman Art Heck spoke for the commissioners, saying that it was their opinion that the federal government should play a larger role in financing projects such as the parkway.
  • The Lawrence area was bracing for a forecast overnight low of near 10 below zero. There was no relief in the extended forecast, with highs for the next few days only expected to reach into the teens.
