Kansas board to discuss school funding changes

? Gov. Sam Brownback’s proposal to rewrite the Kansas school finance formula gets another round of discussion this week by the State Board of Education.

The plan would represent the first complete revision of the formula since the early 1990s.

The Board of Education will discuss the proposal at its monthly meeting on Tuesday. Brownback policy director Landon Fulmer, the plan’s chief architect, briefed the board in December about the plan and will be present to answer more questions.

Brownback is expected to send the plan to the Legislature sometime in the next few weeks.

Kansas distributes about $3 billion in aid to 286 school districts through a formula based on student needs and demographics.
