How to Help: Lawrence Memorial Hospital seeking volunteers for various roles

Agency: Lawrence Memorial Hospital

Contact: Allyson Leland at 785-505-3141 or allyson.leland@lmh.org.

Lawrence Memorial Hospital is in need of volunteers for a variety of positions throughout the hospital. Currently, volunteers are especially needed for the Fit Assist program, the Food and Nutrition Service Volunteer Ambassador program, and at the West Information Desk. Fit Assist volunteers can help participants in the LMH Fit for Life Program by assisting with exercise routines; days and times are flexible and scheduled between the volunteer and program participant. Nutrition ambassadors help patients with their daily meal selections and deliver the requests to the Food and Nutrition Department; volunteer shifts are from 8:30 a.m. to 11 a.m. with open shifts on Tuesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Information desk volunteers assist LMH patients and visitors by answering questions, providing directions and more; shifts are available from 8 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. and 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesdays, 11:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. and 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. Wednesdays, and noon to 3 p.m. Sundays. For more details about how to become an LMH volunteer, contact Allyson Leland at 785-505-3141 or allyson.leland@lmh.org.

Immediate needs

• Independence Inc. is seeking a volunteer who can help a client finish moving a few final large items to his new home, including a television and couch. The client is paralyzed from the waist down and does not have access to a truck to move these items, so a volunteer would need to have his or her own truck or access to another method of transporting large items. If you’re able to help this Independence Inc. client, contact Daniel Brown at 785-841-0333, ext. 147 or dbrown@indepenenceinc.org.

• Friends of Hidden Valley Inc. is in need of volunteers to pick up litter all along the south side of the camp property on Bob Billings Parkway, between the fence and the street. Hidden Valley Camp is no longer as hidden as it was 50 years ago and is now surrounded by development and a major road, so keeping the camp free of trash can be challenging and requires lots of volunteer assistance. Litter also makes its way inside the camp as well, so for the more adventuresome, trash can also be collected in the woods, along the streams and along the fence on the other sides of the camp. This task would be perfect for a walking group or other small club on a routine basis of their choosing and is also a great way for individuals to get some routine exercise while helping out a local agency. No special skills or training are needed — just the desire to make the street and camp “a better place than when you found it” as the Girl Scout slogan goes. For more details about helping Hidden Valley keep the litter to a minimum, contact Durand Reiber at 785-865-4657 or durandi@sunflower.com.

•Douglas County Senior Services is seeking volunteers to help with its Senior Meals program in the kitchen from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Monday through Friday. Volunteers will help with a variety of tasks, including packaging meals for home delivery, serving meals at congregate dinners, etc. It’s a fun social atmosphere for anyone who has a day – or two or three – to give each week in an effort to provide meals for homebound citizens in Douglas County. For more information, contact Kirsty Elliott at 785-842-0543 or kelliott@sunflower.com.
