From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Jan. 5, 1972:

Recent frigid temperatures and icy weather had inconvenienced some people, but for those who enjoyed outdoor recreation, conditions were perfect. An area of Central Park had been flooded for ice skating, and several people were out testing the rink today. The park was the only area available for skating so far, as Kansas University officials had announced that Potter Lake was unsafe. Word from the city was that surfaces were also being prepared at various school tennis courts for skating.

Residents at more than 2,000 dwellings had ordered the new Sunflower Cablevision service so far, and installers were working at a fast pace to set up service in those homes. Yesterday’s first broadcast, which had reached about 800 units, had revealed a few technical difficulties, but the small station was expected to smooth out the rough edges very soon. Bob McMullen and Bob Sullinger had served as anchors for the first news broadcast, with Len Clark and Rich Bailey handling the sports.
