Man charged with stealing ring from Hurst Fine Diamonds

Douglas County prosecutors have filed a felony theft charge against a 32-year-old Lawrence man accused of stealing a diamond ring from Hurst Fine Diamonds in November.

According to court records, Brian N. McCoy has been summoned to appear in court Jan. 12 after he was charged in December. He’s accused of stealing the ring at 5 p.m. Nov. 18 from the store, 3140 Iowa.

A police report said the three-stone yellow diamond ring, which was also recovered that same day, was valued at $4,110.

It’s also not the first time McCoy has been accused of committing a crime against a Lawrence jewelry store.

McCoy agreed to pay $1,824 in restitution in May 2011 and received one year of probation for a misdemeanor theft case involving a fraudulent check he wrote at Kizer-Cummings Jewelers. According to court records, McCoy is also accused of violating terms of his probation because he has failed to verify he attended mental health treatment, failed to report to his probation officer and been charged in a new criminal case.
