Father faces child endangerment charges after arrest near levee

A 33-year-old Lawrence man faces misdemeanor child endangerment charges after a Tuesday incident on the Kansas River levee in North Lawrence.

Sgt. Matt Sarna, a Lawrence police spokesman, said officers were called at 5:45 p.m. Tuesday to the 100 block of North Fifth Street about a man who was possibly intoxicated and was on the levee with two small children. A passerby observed two children ages, 7 and 8, walking on the levee with the man and was concerned for their safety.

Sarna said that police found the man lying down on the levee and that he was uncooperative with officers and became combative. Police arrested the man, John M. Minoglio, and the children were turned over to family members. No injuries were reported, Sarna said. Minoglio was suspected of using alcohol.

Prosecutors charged Minoglio on Wednesday with two counts of misdemeanor child endangerment and one count of misdemeanor battery. A judge set his bond at $20,000 and scheduled his next court appearance for Tuesday.
