Lincoln, Neb. ? A federal jury has convicted a Kansas man for possessing a form of a synthetic drug often called “bath salts.”

The Lincoln Journal Star reports that the drug and another called K2 were found in a car driven by Steven Sullivan, of Lawrence, Kan., when he was stopped for speeding in southeast Nebraska on Oct. 27, 2010.

The “bath salts” wasn’t yet on a law enforcement list of controlled substances.

But he was convicted last week for possessing a “structural analogue” of the drug with intent to distribute.

Prosecutors say that what Sullivan possessed was substantially similar to the chemical structure of an illegal substance, has an effect similar to the controlled substance and has a substantially similar effect on the human body.

Sentencing is set for March.
