From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Jan. 1, 1912:

• “The past year has been a great one in newspaper work in Lawrence. This town used to be called the newspaper graveyard, but that was some time ago. It is now recognized as one of the best newspaper towns in the state. For the first time in its history Lawrence has had a ten and twelve-page paper in a regular edition…. A fire destroyed the plant of the old Journal office in February and the papers were combined. Since the consolidation both papers have been given new life.”
• “The city of Eudora is planning for electric lights now. The town does not believe it can build a plant of its own and is now endeavoring to enter into a contract with the Bowersock Mills and Power Company to secure the current from here.”
• “Lawrence is to have a Coca Cola factory, and a big one. Today the investment and mortgage company rented the building at 7 East Henry [currently 8th] street to the National Coca Cola Concern at Atlanta, Ga., for the purpose of establishing a plant here…. Coca Cola will be made here to supply all the thirsty ones of Kansas. This means the coming to Lawrence of another industry, and one that is conducted on a large scale.”
• “The jury in the case of the state vs. LaHue this afternoon returned a verdict finding the defendant not guilty. LaHue was charged with having killed a couple of hogs belonging to a neighbor, W. M. Sanford. Both the parties are from Lecompton and quite a few of the neighbors were present at the trial. The jury was out but a few minutes when they returned a verdict of not guilty.”
