40 years ago: Hard drug use increasing in spite of raids

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Feb. 26, 1972:

  • Was the use of “hard drugs” on the rise in Lawrence? Douglas County Attorney Mike Elwell announced today that although drug traffic had been slowed for a short time by last year’s four major drug raids, the availability of hard drugs was increasing. Following the July 8 raids, Elwell said, the heroin traffic in Lawrence had practically stopped, but it had gradually returned and was being supplemented by cocaine use.
  • Pickets were still seen on the Kansas University campus this morning as a strike by about 50 civil service employees continued. Some employees of the Buildings and Grounds Department who had chosen to continue working had received anonymous threats, presumably from strikers.
