From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Feb. 24, 1912:

• “At an executive committee meeting of the Douglas County Farmers’ Institute held here today it was decided to hold contests for the boys and girls of Douglas county. These contests will be corn for the boys and sewing, bread making, and putting up fruit for the girls…. The prizes will be for the first class a trip to Manhattan and the second class prizes will be cash.”
• “At the first formal debate of the University Debating society held last night two questions were up for debate. The first one was ‘Resolved, that a Parcels Post system shall be established.’ The negative side won. In the second debate, the question was ‘Resolved, that Congress shall adopt a uniform divorce law.’ In this the affirmative won.”
• “The box supper and program at Number 6 school house last night was attended by a large crowd. There were about forty boxes of every description which sold well. The result of the selling was $45.70 which will be used in repairing and beautifying the school. The crowd was a jolly one and all had a good time.”
• “Washington Creek School District was visited by a real mad dog scare yesterday when an animal that appeared to be mad ran wild, biting five other dogs before it was killed. Yesterday the dog, a yellow animal, put in its appearance and frightened the neighborhood. Yesterday it bit five dogs and this morning put in its appearance at the Nick Thome place. The dog was just making for Mr. Thome when his son shot it. The head of the animal was cut off and brought to the University to be examined for rabies. The report will be made Monday. Among the five dogs bitten were some collies that are very valuable.”
